Don't risk carrying heavy items yourself!

You might think that you don't need a trolley or cart to transport heavy items because you're strong enough to carry them yourself. However, this can be a very bad idea - manual handling is among the leading causes of injury in the UK, and overburdening yourself can lead to lower back injuries and a variety of other MSDs (musculoskeletal disorders), some of which will then stay with you for the rest of your life.

When you lift and carry heavy items manually, there's also the risk that you might drop them, damaging not just the load itself but also whatever it falls onto. That could be the floor...or it could be your foot!

Sack trucks come in all kinds of different sizes and configurations, so if you're planning to buy one for your warehouse, it's a good idea to do a little bit of research beforehand. In order to select the sack truck that is most suitable for your needs, you will need to know the approximate weight of the loads you're planning to carry; you will also need to know about the different types of tyres available, along with a several other variables.

Here at PalleTrucks-Trolleys.com, we have a huge range of sack trucks available to buy and hire. When it comes to load moving / materials handling equipment, we consider ourselves the experts, and so we are pleased to provide this exhaustive buyer's guide to sack trucks and trolleys. Read on to find out which type of sack truck is right for you!

What is a sack truck?

A sack truck is a two-wheeled trolley with an upright, L-shaped design. Sack trucks are commonly used in warehouses (and similar environments) to transport large and/or weighty items.

Sack Truck in Use

Sack trucks (also known as hand trucks or sack trolleys) vary greatly in design and configuration, but every sack truck has a push handle - or, more commonly, a pair of push handles - and a toe plate on which loads are placed. This design makes it very easy to manoeuvre loads around the warehouse floor.

Sack trucks are particularly useful for transporting heavy goods that might cause injury if carried manually.

Choosing your sack truck

When selecting a sack truck, there are several different factors to consider:
  • Weight capacity
  • Back height
  • Tyre type
  • Handle type
  • Special features / functions
Let's look at each of these variables in turn.

Weight Capacity

Overloading your sack truck can damage it, so make sure you get one that's able to cope with the loads you're planning to shift. Our sack trucks range in capacity from 100kg to more than 300kg - please don't hire a 100kg truck if you're planning to move loads weighing more than that!

Back Height

Some sack trucks are taller than others, and back height is an especially important consideration if you're planning to move tall boxes or large stacks. If that is the case, our high back sack truck may be a good choice for you - this product is designed to remain easy to push and pull even when fully loaded.

Tyre Type

Sack trucks are normally fitted with either solid tyres or pneumatic tyres. Pneumatic tyres are filled with air, and so they are better when it comes to cushioning your load against bumps and impacts. However, pneumatic tyres may be punctured by sharp objects, whereas solid tyres cannot be punctured in this way and are thus somewhat more durable.

Handle Type

Most of the sack trolleys we supply here at PalleTrucks-Trolleys.com have two rubber-grip handles for easy, comfortable operation. However, we also stock several high back / tough use sack trucks with just one handle. They look like this:

Special Features & Functions

Depending on the tasks that you are looking to carry out with your sack truck, you may be able to purchase a specialised trolley that is specifically designed to meet your requirements. For example, we stock a selection of stair climbing sack trucks that are capable of smoothly travelling up and down staircases.
