The Christmas period is one of the busiest times for warehouse operatives, especially for those who work in retail. With Amazon taking half of all online Black Friday sales, those working in this sector have most likely experienced a very tiresome holiday season.

We know it can be difficult to work through this time, so we've put together some tips on working in a warehouse over Christmas to make your job easier!

Tips for a Christmas Warehouse Worker

  • Make sure you have equipment that works

As a warehouse worker, you're likely familiar with the likes of pallet trucks and sack trolleys. They make your job easier and help get things done quickly. However, if you have one which does not function properly, you may find it causes more damage than good.

A broken piece of manual handling equipment can cause excessive strain to the worker - so it is advised to make sure your equipment works over this busy period. To browse new manual handling equipment, you can see our ranges here

  • Take breaks

Though it may seem like you can't stop, make sure you take a break occasionally. Sit down for your lunch and rest your body before starting the whole process again. A tired worker isn't an efficient worker - so it is in the companies benefit to let you recharge your batteries. Over the Christmas period, we often see different businesses getting into trouble over lack of breaks for there workers, so make sure you don't become one of them.

  • Always wear protective clothing

Objects falling from a height is one of the biggest contributors to injuries and fatalities in the workplace. Avoid any injuries happening during this busy period by always wearing protective headgear, gloves, proper footwear and eyewear if needed. PPE is a necessary part of keeping you safe while working, so make sure you have yours. You can browse high-quality PPE equipment here

  • Treat the aisles like a busy street

If you're busy during the Christmas period, your colleagues definitely are too. Pay attention to what is going on and keep an eye out for any hazards. Even if you need to get something done, it's never worth putting yourself or someone else in danger.

  • Inspect your equipment before use

All equipment should be inspected before use, so don't forget this rule during Christmas. Especially because the equipment will be used more than normal, you need to ensure there's no danger when using it. Take a look here to see who can inspect lifting equipment.

Most of all, stay safe this Christmas! We hope you have the best day and we will see you in the new year.

Folding sack trolleys make transporting items across the warehouse an easy mission. Simply stack the items on top of the folding toe, secure it and be on your way. But why do you need a folding sack trolley opposed to a standard sack trolley?

What is a Folding Sack Trolley?

A folding sack trolley has an extended foldable toe plate which will allow more items to be transported. The foldable quality of a folding sack trolley is beneficial for many warehouses, especially those which lack space.

There are many folding sack trolleys available, including ones which can be folded completely down. However, these can sometimes be flimsy due to their plastic frame. The folding sack trolleys we sell here at PalleTrucks-Trolleys fold from the toe down, meaning they keep their sturdy metal quality.

Types of Folding Sack Trolleys

There is a range of different folding sack trolleys on offer, so here's a look at the ones we have in stock. Here at PalleTrucks-Trolleys, we choose folding sack trolleys which are high-quality and fit to last you a long time.

Heavy equipment moving skates

Moving a heavy load using nothing more than your own strength can be risky for a number of reasons. Heavy lifting can lead to a number of musculoskeletal disorders and other long-term problems, and the load itself may become damaged if you accidentally drop it.

Fortunately, there are a number of different products that can be used to move weighty items with ease. Among the most versatile options are the heavy equipment moving skates that we stock here at PalleTrucks-Trolleys.com.

How to Use a Sack Truck

A sack truck is a useful and efficient way to transport heavy loads, which is why you will find them in most material handling workplaces. A high percentage of workplace injuries are a result of manual handling, so it's important to use the equipment correctly. To help avoid workplace injuries, we've put together a guide on how to use a sack truck correctly.

  • Check before using

Before using you place items on a sack truck and attempt to use it, be sure to check the following things are in working order.

  • Do the brakes work?
  • Are the wheels working well?
  • Is any part of the sack truck broken?
  • Will the wheels cope with the terrain?
  • Are you loading it with the correct weight? Will it go over the weight limit?
  • Do you need to secure the load?

Once you have answered all of these questions and ensured the sack truck is working efficiently, it should be safe to use.

  • Using a Sack Truck

Sack trucks are relatively simple to use and do not require formal training to operate. First, load up the sack truck by placing the load on top of the toe. Ensure the items are stable and do not exceed the weight limit. If it is required, use a restraint to secure the load to the sack truck. A restraint like our 400kg Endless Cam Buckle Lashing Load Restraint Strap is ideal for this job.

Once the load is secured to your sack truck, use the handles to gently pull the top of the sack truck backward and push. The sack truck should move with ease (if it doesn't, you may have exceeded the weight limit or there's something wrong with the wheels). If you feel like the sack truck is dragging, your wheels may not be suitable for the terrain. To avoid this, follow the steps above before using your sack truck!

  • Precautions to take

Before any heavy-duty moving operation is conducted, an assessment of the hazards should be taken to ensure safety. Things to look out for include:

  • Will there be any uneven surfaces? If you will be going uphill or downhill or working on a platform, it is necessary to keep the wheels away from the edge and make sure you are able to push/pull the load without straining.
  • Will there be any obstacles? There will typically be many other workers in your workplace, so work out where everyone will be to avoid any collisions.
  • Have you assembled the load correctly? Be sure to always place the heavier items below the lighter items. This will prevent any items falling.
  • Can you see where you're going? Make sure no objects are obscuring your view on the sack truck.

We hope this guide has helped provide you with some help on how to use a sack truck. We stock plenty of sack trucks here at PalleTrucks-Trolleys - if you'd like to browse our range of sack trucks, click here. Alternatively, we have sack trolleys which can also be found here!
